I, Davit Gottfried Wilhelm Heth von Melvaunt, hereby resign my post as Councilor of Lord Vetinari's Advisory Council, effective immediately. This City has broken my will, the sheer work She demands is intolerable to even my faculties. I have prayed to the Red Knight, to Cordoria Herself, in hopes that the courage could be mustered; finding none.

Thus with a heavy and weary heart do I admit that I have failed Her, and the multitudes who supported me and mine over the years upon this isle, and prepare to depart. When it became a job, sheer bloody-minded toil, rather than pleasurable activity- a cause I genuinely believe in, even now -I knew that forcing myself through it would only lead to disappointment.

Soon, I will be writing up some pieces of advice for the incumbent and future Councils and leaders and patriots. Until then, Cordor, believe me to be very sincerely yours,

Analysis of City Magnates

Carla Wemblethen; Councilor
Her heart is in the right place, but her absence (yes, I know, ironic coming from me) is a continuous thorn in her side. Don't bother letting her in thrice unless she actually changes.

Syclya; Councilor
Why in the Seven Heavens a semi-literate Chauntean Druid whose campaign platform was "food and plants" (the two things the City isn't going to run out of this century) should be elected again is beyond me. Please don't.

Giogi Silveroak; Minister of Commerce
The best man for the job, by which I mean only. He's been a dear comrade in office, but the man is overworked to a fault. Whoever takes Council next, support him or the City's economy crumbles. Giogi, for your own sake, find some underlings to help you!

Storm; Commander
Loathed, distrusted, fiercely indignant. All the good qualities of a guard commander. Kick her out if you want, but your only option there is to dismantle the Guard entirely and rebuild them from the ground up - including the laws, training methods, uniform, people, EVERYTHING. Or else you needn't have bothered, as the present style of commanding forms a lineage. And nobody who's going to be on Council for the next ten years will have the guts (myself included) or the intellect do it correctly. Leave her be.

Perry; Magistrate
Sometimes, a vacant position is better than an occupied one. Sometimes.

Tyrion; Admiral
Keep him. Continue the tradition of the Admiralty being an untouchable contradictory opinion factory during Council meetings, please. They need it.

Cordor Reactionaries (anyone crying for 'transparency' or 'representation' or 'democracy'; or stopping you from altering laws/charters because 'past precedent must be upheld') should be executed, publicly, during Council meetings. Citizens, if you keep electing Councilors who don't do anything but uphold prior rulings, then you're dooming yourselves to a continued existence of not only stagnation, but utter contemptuous boredom and cyclical nonsense. Take risks. Not stupid ones like obvious thief midgets or grass-skirt wearing elves. But calculated ones. Otherwise, why bother having people in charge?

What's the point of the system if it's always the same?
