Verankht Wants an Apple By Justin Gaskell - A Childrens Book

Verankht is hungry. He wants something to eat! Verankht’s favorite food is apples, and he wants an apple. [Picture of simple stick-figure Verankht, holding his stomach and looking sad.]

Here is Nelehien. He has something for Verankht to eat. “Would you like this?” He asks his friend. [Picture of Nelehien offering Verankht a round, orange fruit]

“That’s not an apple!’ says Verankht. “That’s an Orange! I want an apple” [Picture of Verankht looking angry and Nelehien running away, leaving the Orange behind.]

Look! Here is Lysander. Lysander has something for Verankht to eat. “Would you like this?” He asks his friend. [Picture of Lysander holding out a pear shaped fruit.]

“That’s not an apple!’ says Verankt. “That’s a pear! I want an apple!” [Picture of Verankt looking even angrier, and Lysander running away, leaving the pear behind.]

Don’t worry Verankht! Here comes Serephina, and she has something for Verankht to eat too! “Would you like this?” She asks. [Picture of Serephina offering Verankht a tiny red fruit.]

“That’s not an apple!” Says Verankht. “That’s a strawberry! I want an apple!!” [Picture of Verankht looking positively livid, and Serephina fleeing, leaving the strawberry behind.]

Oh no! Verankht is very hungry and mad! I think he may cry! Don’t cry Verankht! [Picture of stick figure Verankht, a single tear running down his angry caricatured face.]

Hooray! Ubaldo is here! And what does he have in his hand? [A picture of Ubaldo holding a simple apple, smiling at Verankht who is now also smiling.]

“Would you like this apple Verankt?” Asks Ubaldo. “Yes!” Says Verankht. “And what’s the magic word?” Asks Ubaldo, and Verankht has to think. Do you know what the magic word is? [A picture of Verankht looking very thoughtful and Ubaldo, holding the apple out.]

“PLEASE!” Says Verankht and Ubaldo gives him the apple! Verankht eats the apple and he is very happy. But what is this? He wants more! Oh no! Can you help him pick out the apples to eat? [A picture of lots of fruit, drawn simplistically, with a few apples for the readers to spot.]

It’s late now, and all the Knights are very sleepy. Especially Verankht, who has a full tummy! It’s time for bed. Say goodnight Knights of the Road! Say goodnight! Night night! [a picture of all the Knights, with Verankht’s having a slightly large stomach, waving goodbye to the reader.]
