The kobold pantheon is threefold, each working to a common purpose. Kurtulmak (Steelscale, The Horned Sorcerer) leads the pantheon and is served by the demigods Gaknulak the kobold god of trickery and Dakarnok, The Great Bandit.

The kobolds are an ancient race and their origins are covered in a number of differing myths. All agree however that both Kurtulmak and the original kobolds were born of eggs from the dragon Tiamat. Rather than being hatched by conventional means these eggs were opened by magics thus explaining the physical difference between the kobolds and their draconic parent.

Kurtulmak is seen by some as a either a servant of Tiamat or Io, while some isolated kobold societies even turn to the worship of Dragons over Kurtulmak himself. That kobolds are often found working in the capacity of servants to powerful evil dragons is no coincidence, whatever the exact truth regarding their origin none deny that a common link exists between the two races.

Kurtulmak is a god of mining and warfare, and shares the kobold's xenophobic and industrious outlook. He is also known to be entirely without compassion, mercy and humour and this is perfectly reflected in the harsh nature of existing kobold societies. Kurtulmak is a great enemy of the gnomish god Garl Glittergold and the pantheon which serves him and the reason for this is again explained in many conflicting myths among the kobold and gnomish peoples. Some say it began with a joke played upon Kurtulmak by Glittergold, which the humourless kobold gold failed to appreciate, others speak of a vindictive act committed by Glittergold when he purposely collapsed Kurtulmak's hall ,while the gnomes insist is it results from an evil plan hatched by Kurtulmak which backfired and left him humiliated.

Gaknulak is the kobold deity of protection, stealth, trickery, and traps and is a loyal follower of Kurtulmak. His own followers are the scouts, rogues, agents and trappers of kobold society. The kobold race is well known for its affinity with traps and are capable of constructing among the most complex, most deadly traps on Faerun and Gaknulak is rightly revered as the patron of this trade. His few priests and many followers are dedicated to the cause of defeating their people's enemies before a single kobold life is risked in battle.

Dakarnok is the youngest of the kobold deities, and is perhaps the most fierce. He is also known as The Great Bandit, The Raider of the Master Looter and was once a mortal kobold. Before being deified legends state Dakarnok was a kobold war chief who lead a crusade from the Underdark against all humans, demihumans, and humanoids, in the process founding a kobold empire to rival all others. Kurtulmak, pleased with the kobold's achievements came to Dakarnok as he lay dying at the end of his natural life and offered him a place at his place as it side. Dakarnok accepted and became the third member of the kobold pantheon.

The priests and followers of Dakarnok believe that the noblest pursuit for a kobold is to emulate their deity; to fight, conquer, pillage, and loot. They preach that destroying your enemies through raid and outright war is the best way to preserve the safety of the home warren. to take all of value from a fallen settlement and destroy the rest as a warning to your enemies. His followers also believe in the power of wealth and hold personal fortune to be the sole measure of a kobold's worth. He is followed by warriors, bandits and strategists and his clergy often double as military leaders among kobold society.

Kurtulmak and Dakarnok reside in the Nine Hells of Baator while Gaknulak makes his home in the Bleak Eternity of Gehenna.

Given their xenophobic nature it is no surprise that the kobold pantheon have no allies among the gods of other races, however like the duergar god Laduguer, the gnomish god Glittergold and the dwarven god Dumathoin, Kurtulmak shows respect to Grumbar the Earthlord in whose realm his people build their warrens.
