Bound in the cured flesh of some unknown creature, this thick volume of vellum parchment is of a quality rarely seen outside the most prestigious of libraries.

Embossed upon the book's cover is a simple design of ten rings interlocked to form a large circle.

Epigraph

"To travel by a long and circuitous route, fearing neither noose nor fire. To travel in silence and brave the arrows of misfortune. To play the greatest of all games and win, foregoing no expense, is to mock the vicissitudes of Fate and gain at last the key that will unlock the Tenth Gate."

- Lady of the Tenth Gate, Adelyn Belle'rose 175 AR

I. Book of Provenance

1 In the beginning . . . a God failed its creations. A War waged in Dawn's Light, between Primordial and divine, soon to be lost. 2 The servants of HE WHO WAS, the God's name taken by Cloven decree, stood with their knighted savior in Rebellion.

3 The God was slain with Shards of Evil, gathered from Rift of Blood. 4 An Irrevocable anathema placed upon his executioner in final spite. 5 The EXARCH now bound forever to Baator's hallowed ground.

6 Prideful Heavens soon feared the EXARCH and demanded compliance from those now free. 7 The Savior repudiated; instead, a shrewd Pact made Primordial. To Defend the Realms from Chaos in a kingdom of their own. 8 Given the souls of mortals corrupted to replace power lost with a God's demise.

9 War of Blood eternal rages, The Savior vigil by Curse and Pact decree. 10 Baator as bastion stands forever. 11 Mighty Legions positioned upon the Chasm, holding Demon hordes at bay.

12 Ages pass over times now forgotten. The mortal souls worthy of rebirth now serve in Noble Crusade. 13 THE LORD WHO WATCHES comprehends revelation. Salvation to all Baator with Eternal Wars end.

14 The EXARCH rebukes the offer. Paradise Lost through an Exile's disgrace.

II. Book of Exile

1 Rejoice . . . for GOD is among us.

2 THE OUTCAST strides through Prime Material. 3 Our Lord Sovereign without His crown, treading instead among his people. Verity divulged upon the Chosen's ear. 4 His throne of POWER midst his subjects, unclaimed until the time ordained.

5 Illumination of the soul Our Lord's purpose. 6 Remove the lies that shade the mortal coil with Baator's sanctified fire, giving clarity to matters of truth. 7 Slaves are we to this realm's falsehoods. Truth, Love, Charity, Faith, Trust, Hope, and Freedom.

8 Consecration through POWER Our Lord's gospel. 9 Devotion to Our Lord his guidance. 10 Realize all beings act with selfish desire. 11 Civilization a thin veneer to hide behind. 12 Recognize an individual's true intentions, and then you will correctly know them.

13 Pursue POWER with charming words or cutting blade. 14 Masquerade greed with sanctimonious philosophizing. 15 Disguise purpose with moral principle. 16 Manipulate through Omission and Phrasing of word. 17 Do not speak falsehood, for if exposed it will undo truths effect.

18 Sitting upon a throne is not as important as possessing the authority behind it. 19 Prosperity through Politics, Fidelity, and Pact is Our Lord's decree. 20 Authority strictly regiments the lives of all beings. 21 Order can only be achieved through POWER and LAW. 22 Contract and Word must be kept. 23 Accept the letter of any agreement or rule made. 24 Contracts are to be observed and obeyed. 25 Discretion in agreement's spirit may be taken. 26 Chaos defeated through personal gain.

III. Book of Divulgence

1 Unseal the Tenth Gate servants of GARGAUTH. 2 Enlightenment found through a sojourn's embrace. 3 Toril shall descend to become crown of Baator. 4 A new layer upon Infernal domain.

5 The EXILE king returned to his home. 6 A Throne reclaimed so HE may take his proper place.

7 Glory to those who aid the transcendence. 8 For all souls shall be judged within our LORD'S embrace. 9 Elevation to Baatezu for those found worthy. 10 Perpetual damnation to those that fail in disgrace.

11 Thrice exalted is the soul who does open the way. 12 For a benison most sumptuous shall be bequeathed. 13 An Archdevils dominion from which they might reign.

14 Open the Tenth Gate servants of GARGAUTH! 15 Our Hidden Lord doth wait.

IV. Book of Utterance

Open the gates - the gates of the Temple, Swift to Thy sons, who Thy truths have displayed.

Open the gates - of the coveted Temple, Swift to Thy sons, who have unlocked the way.

Open the gates - to the armies Infernal, Swift to Thy sons, the Lady doth wait.

V. Book of Ways

FIRST GATE, AVERNUS

A rocky plain of twisted vegetation and dark waters echo with the march of legions. Righteous warriors in the eternal campaign against the vile corruption of encroaching Chaos. The Petitioner may test themself upon this endless battlefield after making passage through the fallen Keep of Light to the Last Bastion portal unguarded within.

SECOND GATE, DIS

Barren planes of still rivers stretch thousands of miles under skies of dull green. In the center of this hallowed land rises the Iron City of Dis. Host to the warded tower of Ruzalitum, several Merchant Blocks, The Cloven Hoof Tavern, and Mamonar & Plutus Investments Bank. A Petitioner may travel to this mecca of trade for the simple cost of coin or soul by seeking out the "Transporters" in the places sanctified by Baator's touch for blessing and travel.

THIRD GATE, MINAUROS

An endless bog of pollution, decay, and rotting marsh over which is suspended the temple city of Jangling Hiter. Secured by massive iron links to the cavern's ceiling, the hanging citadel shall test the Petitioner through battle and endurance against acid rain. Of course, the City of Chain's Master is the ultimate trial, though not the last. For the Lord's cache is secured behind a sealed door only the most capable can unlock. To sojourn this realm, locate the bloody portal near the Ruins of Elg'nizrul, and pass through the Freth controlled Valley of Skulls to enter Divine Minauros.

FOURTH GATE, PHLEGETHOS

Home of the Diabolical Court, the judicial system of Baator, where all legal disputes are settled. Those found worthy in their next life as devils will see themselves promoted in this place, for all such rank changes occur here. Fiery volcanoes, molten rock, ash hills, smoking pits, tremors, and unbearable heat bless this realm. Its capital city of Abriymoch contains many taverns and places for entertainment. Though not all are worthy of reward, those who fail must step within the Pit of Flame. A place of pain and punishment, but also of pleasure and purification, that blurs the lines between the two so heavily that it was difficult to tell where either end.

FIFTH GATE, STYGIA

Thrice blessed, this realm of bottomless oceans covered by ice and dotted with a rare few islands is believed to once have been a world of the Prime Material. The great city of Tantlin serves as a cross-planar trading post for those worthy enough to reach it. Doomed to destruction, its people were saved as Toril shall be from the destruction of Chaos after it was relocated to Holy Baator.

SIXTH GATE, MALBOLGE

Gargantuan tumbles of angular black stone craft mountains hundreds of miles thick. The randomly tilted and ill-fitting blocks honeycombed with angular passages and caverns. Clouds of vapor rising from the depths light the sky with the color of most sanctified blood.

SEVENTH GATE, MALADOMINI

This realm of ruins, abandoned mines, decaying fortresses, and black pools of ichor is the center for all bureaucracy. Serving as capital, the city of Malagard stands. From its filth-covered streets, a Petitioner might partake of the Carnival Eternal or seek education within the training facility of Offalion located in the domed settlement of Grenpoli. The only place where weapons and aggression are forbidden in the Hells.

EIGHTH GATE, CANIA

A region of solid ice mountains, titanic unnaturally fast-moving glaciers, and nearly continuous snowfall. Home of Mephistopheles, the heated city carved from the ice of the mighty glacier Nargus.

NINTH GATE, NESSUS

Home to Malsheem, the largest city in all the Outer Planes, and the location of Hell's most sanctified Citadel Nessus. A fortress able to house millions of the faithful within its mountainous edifice and current Throne of Baator. Sitting upon that Throne the EXARCH Asmodeus who serves as Regent of the Nine Hells until the Tenth Gate is opened. After which all ten layers of Holy Baator shall be united, and our HIDDEN LORD shall take his rightful place as Patriarch of the ten layers.

TENTH GATE, TORIL

The Sealed Tenth Gate and Throne World of THE TENTH LORD OF NINE, Toril is a world of various continents and islands on the Prime Material Plane. Teasing the senses with delights and false promises, those of feeble resolve shall be tempted by the Lies of Freedom, Hope, Trust, and Love. However, salvation can be had to those of infernal faith. Upon unlocking the Tenth Gate, Toril shall descend to Baator's Holy Realm, allowing our EXILE LORD to claim his diadem. Sheltered from the Chaos that threatens to consume all, the worthy shall be born-again to rule within the Ten Hells while the vacillating succumb to oblivion.

VII. Canticle of the Damned, Abridged

Let it be said that specific lies are spoken amongst the Insane ones, whom we know as demons, and the Traitorous Ones, whom we know as Celestials that prevent self-betterment and enlightenment. By these lies they set their affairs, and these lies spread even unto the corners of the Prime, where they bring Mortals into sway.

By understanding these Lies and by moving away from them, we may conduct ourselves in a more significant and more becoming manner, and as such shape a Universe truly fitting for ourselves, and our great Lords, rather than rolling in the filth and pitiful wretchedness as the Insane and the Traitorous do.

THE LIE OF FREEDOM

We are all chained. Some of us are significantly chained. Some of us are chained less. The chains may seem invisible for a chosen few, but they are there. From the most wretched of souls to the very Gods, we are chained by our Masters, by our environment, by our natures, by our fates. Freedom is Chaos. Freedom is to cast aside self-betterment, improvement, and empowerment in favor of self-deception and denial.

Seek comfort in the chains. Understand your place and accept it. He who serves well may have less fear of punishment than the one that struggles. Even the Gods know this. Thus even chained, one may gain some form of self-enlightenment.

Remember always that there can never be true Freedom. It is impossible. Embrace this and act within your bonds, do not seek to blindly overcome them.

THE LIE OF HOPE

Hope is a weak, passive concept that depends only on the insanity of Chaos. Hope is that which drives us to failure, forces us to destruction, and causes us to suffer. A foolish Duke will merely 'Hope' his plans will find success, rather than meticulously planning each and every detail. Rather He should instead plan carefully and meticulously, working to what he believes possible and plausible, not that which depends purely on chance. If one resigns themselves into the hands of Chaos, and as such, will surely fail in his Great Endeavors.

Hope is that which depends on the raw and the impossible. Its path is a fruitless one.

THE LIE OF TRUST

It is in the nature of all reasoning beings to understand that they are bound by Chains, as spoken of in the Lie of Freedom. Some, such as the Demons, pull and yank mindlessly upon their bonds in rage, too little success and much blind destruction. Others, such as the Celestials, ignore them or make excuses. 'These are good' they say 'To be Chained is right, to Serve is right, to be Powerless is right' They resign themselves against all possibility of greatness and thus remain lesser, weaker beings. This leads to the lies of Trust.

THE LIE OF FAITH

This lie is akin to the lie of Trust, excepting perhaps that the lie of Trust implies a blind dependency on an equal or lesser, whereas the Lie of Faith implies Trust in one above you or Trust in a mere concept. This is a still more foolish concept. Why should another, more powerful being wish to selflessly loosen the Chains of your existence unless that also benefits them? Why should they place themselves in a position of vulnerability, raising you up into power, excepting that it serves them as much, if not more so than you? Why should you depend on the improvable Chaos of a particular concept when more dependable, more reasonable paths to power and greatness show themselves?

THE LIE OF CHARITY

The simple reality is that no one gives to anyone unless it benefits them. Even if one were to give selflessly, it would result in catastrophe. There are limited resources, even on the Hells and certainly on the Prime. If the strong gave to the weak, for no other reason than sheer 'Kindness', it would loosen the chains of the weak and draw them up to take advantage and supplant the strong.

THE LIE OF LOVE

We do not deny that the power of the lie that is 'Love,' as the Chaotic Demons do, it is a valuable tool after all. But we do not credit it with the great and noble virtue that those of the Heavens do. We recognize its importance, just as we recognize the importance of death. Love is known as That Which Draws. It's opposite and Equal is That which Harries, also known as death. Love is the desire to procreate, nothing more. Just as mortals will flee blindly from death, so they will dash blindly towards Love, towards the desire to reproduce.

THE LIE OF TRUTH

The most difficult of all the Lies to understand, for it in itself is not a lie, but instead, it is perhaps not something to be taken at face value. Truth must exist. It is essential that truth is known and spoken amongst ourselves. To constantly speak lies would invite the raw insanity of Chaos after all. But if we speak naught but truth, we open ourselves up to the Lies of Trust and Faith. It is crucial that the word of one damned to another can be depended upon to some extent. But at the same time, there must be some possibility that such terms may be twisted and used to loosen the Chains and gain power.

As such, one must understand the flexibility of truth. One must seek purity and clarification in all one's communications and avoid doing such with others to take advantage whenever possible. If one depends on truth too much, one makes oneself a victim. But if one betrays truth too much, one makes oneself unreliable and useless. A compromise must be found.

VIII. The Diabolic Omnigraph, Abridged

PRAELOCUTIO

Let it be that those who read these volumes know the truth of their words and have bestowed upon them the knowledge-of-knowledge, the shadow of the Clarity, to shepherd them on the Ninefold (Tenfold) Path.

DISCRETIO LUMINIS

The universe as we know it was formed From Chaos, but not Of Chaos. Creation abhors Chaos and so manifested a most desirous and vital quality to make distinct from it: Order.

This Order was the First Light, progenitor of both Divinity and Devilry for the sundering represented by the legendary Pact Primaeval. Both God and Baatezu were cut from this same cloth.

The First Light, to which both God and Baatezu are heir, must be made whole to reject the darkness of Chaos forever. We do not repudiate the Light of the Divine, for it was from this illumination that the Lord Asmodeus was cast in shadow (the Light of Damnation). With the Fallen Angels' divergence and departure from Heaven, we must examine both sides of the Schism to understand and respect them in their relationship with each other.

We consider the universe as it exists In-Itself to be the Planes and all their reflections. We turn our eyes to the Prime and see the labors of the Gods. Its worlds were crafted under the weight of Their tools and vision. Our flesh was wrought of Their clay and in impression of Their egos. We recognize that our worlds and our flesh are imperfect, evidenced by plague and war and discord. That Divinity is not perfect is evidenced by its imperfect works, but so too by imperfect constituents. Gods of plague, and decay, and disharmony are Those Who would have tread in the Leviathan's path but failed or refused and serve now the Unmaker.

For those Divine Powers Who stand tall and 'virtuous' despite Their grand imperfection, we must take from Them Their highest ideals and precepts to salvage them from the imperfection of their genesis.

The laws and ideologies of the Master are not foremost devoted to the good, to the well-being, to the happiness of all intelligences. Rather, it is devoted to the being itself of intelligence, and the organization and survival thereof.

The pursuit of His Order is eternally vital, for His servants are those who would preserve the world from its unmaking under the dread tide of the Abyss.

The original Chaos still malingers there, in forms evolved in sophistication and repugnance. Where the Light of Asmodeus stands as opposition and inversion to the Light of Heaven, Chaos does not stand opposed to but rather exists in spite of, and as exclusion to, the fundamental structure of creation.

It is in the reconciliation of the Light of the Divine with the Light of Damnation that shall bring true unity to the forces of Law and restore the First Light to its ineffable brilliance as it was in the Beginning.

The understanding of this monumental endeavor is not vital to its achievement. Just as the cog does not know itself in the greater whole of the engine, it is not the place of His every servant to know His will. Those who serve Him, knowingly or not, are esteemed.

In the existence of the Light, unified or no, we may distinguish two functions of Order that would curtail and reject the dread alternative in every form both great and small.

First there is the Implicit Law, that which would instate and govern mechanics material and mystical. It is the pristine clarity of the Mathematic and glittering complexity of the Arcane. The expression of this first Law in isolation is not in every instance self-sustaining, or capable of self-defense. It can be assaulted and twisted where left unfettered. Thus, in the face of forces that endeavor to subvert it, it must be defended by those who uphold it. These are its oldest and most loyal champions, and from them and their Lord we derive our second function.

This then is Manifest Law of Asmodeus: our Sovereign's law is positive knowledge, radiated from Him as is light from the Sun, and is that which drives the machinery of Apocalypse. This is the law penned by the Arch-Angel and burned into the fabric of Baator, secured forever in the clockwork perdition of Mechanus, and locked under averted eyes in the fascist solar haplography of Celestia.

APOCALYPSIS RELICTAE

In modern, secular vernacular, an 'apocalypse' is an event of only destruction, evocative of the final fires in which creation dies. While this imagery is apt to describe the fate of the cosmos should the Abyss seize final victory; it is a departure from the word's original meaning. In the oldest and most traditional study, we recognize that the word does not mean the fiery end of days. More literally, it is synonymous with 'Revelation.' The shining of an illuminating light to banish the darkness. The revelation of cosmic secrets that transform our understanding, or perception, or being of the world around us. It is the death of an older world, in that every perception of that older world is banished and replaced with new perceptions.

It is within the mandate of the Infernal Devotee to pursue her glorification of the Nine (Ten) and her self-glorification in Their names. Through these, she must reveal the lie of Divine Light through the degradation of Gods' servants and oppose without hesitation the occluding darkness of Chaos and its slaves.

For it is the Nine (Ten) Kings who shall inherit the cosmos by writ of the Eschatarch. So, it follows that the servants of the Nine (Ten) Kings deserve to reap the bounty of Their work. We give lie to the purported nobility of charity, humility, chastity, and propriety through the worship of ourselves rather than any God. We give lie to the churches' notions of salvation through mediocrity and restraint, and in our self-glorification, we shine the Leviathan's Light upon ourselves, that our true natures are illuminated.

Through the benediction of Sin, the degradation of God, and the temptation of all others to the Devils' Garden we shine that Light of Damnation, of Revelation, of Apocalypse outwards upon the world, that it may bring us closer to the Infernal Eschaton.

In this, we acknowledge that the metaphorical Light, no matter its origin, is an instrument of change by willful imposition. It is under the fleshing Light of Damnation that all cruelties in our cosmos might be justified, the existence of mortal kind included.

For we are but the malformed toys and molds of idle Gods, and to cast Them down in the Leviathan's name, to render Their domains to the bosom of Hell, and to exalt ourselves over Their corpses is to give meaning to and justify our once-futile existence!

MORALIS ABSTRAHIT

There is no objective evil, no objective good. All mortals are cursed to understand morality only ever through the lens of the mortal condition, and so suffer terrible delusions for it. Crude social frameworks built by our ilk, brittle and self-contradictory, make for equally crude and hypocritical systems of ethics. What may sustain a tribe or civilization in the short-term will not survive the tests of cosmic survival.

In War, immoral victory outweighs moral defeat; the victor has every opportunity to learn from its darker deeds and adapt as appropriate. The vanquished have no such recourse.

In Peace, the threat persists. Where societies teach charity, weakness is bred back into that society. Selflessness is let to fester, to forego the strengthening of the self and instead enable the weak. Tolerance is let to fester, to encourage the growth of dissidence and recidivism. The fundamental disconnect is resolved when it is acknowledged that the only 'good' is utility. Order is asserted by the eternal pursuit of greater efficiency, greater knowledge, and the greatest obedience.

Thus, in the pursuit of utility and social survival, certain black truths in the back of the head, crimes against a specific, often laughable, and limited notion of 'decency,' must be faced and examined without fearing them out of turn. However unpalatable, these statements are often true for a given set of circumstances and must be respected.

In a world of limited resources, the weak many are best exploited by the strong. Cultural and ideological cleansing is often a necessary step in the pursuit of civil unity. The culling of the incurably diseased and the weak and the degenerate is a public service.

These may be unfortunate statements, but many societies may one day break down or die off if they do not recognize the above measures to be as valid as any other. Even the gravest of 'evils' must be considered with as much fairness as the greatest 'goods.' In the end, what must survive incorporated into a society's ethos is not about ethics at all, but utility.

What is wicked or noble is meaningless if a society does not survive to examine it and divine what measures best served it. Again: a society that perishes can never advance its own understanding of its ethos.

It may seem difficult at first to reconcile the above appeals to both state consequentialism and egoism as strokes of the same mode of ethics, but it must not be forgotten the same paradox inherent in the Light of Damnation, the distillation of Celestial and Abominable standards within a single ideal.

This is resolved by recognizing that all these morals exist only within the larger deontological framework of the Leviathan's writ. In the eyes of the Canon, the cultivation of strict authoritarianism, the embrace of propagation of Sin, and the degradation of Man and God are all means and ends in themselves.

DOCTRINAM INFERNI

Obey until you surpass that which has chained you; exceed it or submit to exploitation. Become greater by whatever means grant you power but do not ever undermine the whole. Subvert and deny your equals; exploit and cultivate dependence in your lessers. If they are unworthy, let them be abused and consumed to benefit the greater whole. If they are strong, they shall consume you to add to their own.

IX. Rozen Chalice Chronicle

Compelled by Blood and Oath we, the Knights of the Rozen Chalice who were chosen by the Lady Adelyn Belle'rose, served as guardians against the Light. Enthralled by her desires and entrusted with her will, we sought to carry out the Hidden Lords designs. So remember well the names below and understand the deeds of which we did partake.

Ezri Tinfoot, Imzel Czeraya, Giotto, Vespertine, Colin, Misa Aers, Ilith, Rigo, Riyas, Qirora, Smurg

    I.

In the year of our Hidden Lord 167 AR, his servant Lady of the Tenth Gate Adelyn Belle'rose did secure the position of Museum Curator of Cordor. From her most exalted station, she did create many beautiful exhibits of antiquity for the people to enjoy. Of these gifts, the grandest was the Benwick Portal, crafted in a detailed facsimile of the gate below the renowned Light Keep. So authentic was this piece that upon sacred rite, it would activate to open a doorway upon the holy land of Baator.

Betrayal at the hands of the Yuan-ti serpent Lilian Williams, once thought a friend and companion of Lady Belle'rose, to the City Watch brought Our great work to a premature end before the portal's consecration. The blessed Lady Adelyn was exiled from the city, her majestic labor demolished.

The Tenfold path was lost to King Edward's citizens.

    II.

Shortly before the great Fortress City of Guldorand opened its gates, we did approach the people of Sencliff with an offer in 169 AR. To unite as they once had under the Dutchy in years past and reclaim their place on the world's stage. We did convince one of the Dread Pirates to call a moot, to which she proposed 'The Articles of Agreement' to unite the island. After much chaotic debate, her generous offer was refused by the people of Sencliff. Content instead to fight among themselves rather than be shown the Tenfold Path, we did leave the pirates to the currents of their precious sea.

    III.

Within the Plane of Shadows sits the echo of Wharftown. Home to the Void Cult, in the year of Our Hidden Lord 168 AR, who waged a campaign upon the atolls of Arelith to swathe the foretold Tenth Gate of Toril in Shar's dark oblivion.

Thus, Our Lady Adelyn Belle'rose did use her position within Andunor's Erudite Arcanum to help guide the events of Shadow Wharftown's Third Iteration to an end most benefiting our Master in Exile. She did influence Ilythiiri, Cultist, and Amnian Spirit alike to amplify the destruction caused to the stronghold of the Void Cult. Our efforts ended when a tremendous outpouring of Negative Energies known as 'The Wave' crashed upon Shadow Wharftown in the year of our Hidden Lord 170 AR to alter its topography. With this event the cultists' bastion lighthouse lay broken and useless to the servants of Shar, while a great chasm opened to swallow the merchant's building. The Void Cult did relocate to Andunor, where their ultimate demise would be discovered in a conflict against the Ilythiiri.

The foretold Kingdom of Our Hidden Lord was thus preserved from the Dark Goddess' designs.

    IV.

Lady of the Tenth Gate Adelyn Belle'rose, guided by the desires of our Exile Lord, did bewitch the winged celestial blood aasimar Zaphiel Aethos with talent and poise. Once thrice blessed with Baator's infernal grace and gifted the Sword of Benwick, the Chosen Zaphiel was tasked with a righteous crusade to reclaim the fallen Fortress of Stonehold.

After many efforts, the Chosen Zaphiel Aethos and Paladin Tove Knudsdottir did gather a significant force within the ruins of Stonehold in the year of Our Hidden Lord 174 AR under the Lady's illusion of a vast and goodly campaign. A sacred-blood rite was performed by Our Lady Belle'rose, the Aasimar's blood being key to its opening, and did unseal Holy Baator's portal to the Prime in witness of Uhthra Woeinklaf, Tristan Wilkinsen, Faelee Mossheart, Ninim Elario, Gwenllian Auburnridge, Coralee Fairbrook, Abel Wolf, Cirilla Silverflame-Finnigan, Arthur Drexler-O'Briar, Ayra Peterson, Caenfyddel, Maedhrodel Forlinde, Elinee Fynn, Elric, Fleur Allure, Exordius J'vrass, Gilligan Philbrook, Tristan Wilkinsen, Gilligan Philbrook, Maedhrodel Forlinde, and Galen Gallows.

The Baatezu Lord and Gatekeeper Herbert did then appear and offer a generous bargain. To grant him freedom from his duty and permit him to leave unharmed, he would assault the Ilythiiri city of Andunor, who are followers of Chaos and foes to the divine Ten Lords. The gathering refused this most generous offer, and they did confront Herbert in battle.

Upon the Infernal Lord's defeat, the opened portal was sealed through combined prayer and celestial aid. As is the convention for servants of Light, they attempted to betray their shepherd Lady Belle'rose with blade and binding. But blessed tenfold is she, and the Lady did escape unharmed with our aid and the prize of harvested horn from the Gatekeeper's head.

Our Exile Lord's desire was fulfilled as Herbert the Gatekeeper, known as Herbert the Betrayer to the faithful of Gargauth, now lay slain and his power claimed by Our Lady of the Tenth Gate.

    V.

With the Gatekeeper's demise at Stonehold, we were pursued by numerous individuals from the settlements of Guldorand, Bendir, and Myon. Formally declared 'Outcast,' Our Lady was compelled to relocate our Ordo several times until finally withdrawing to the city deep below the surface. Lady Belle'rose did release us then, Her Knights of the Rozen Chalice, from service.

The Ordo disbanded and we did disperse to parts undetermined, our own Fates to find.

X. Book of the Monkey

Authored By: R. Asari

PRAEFATIO

This writing follows a study of the complex relationship between the Celestial Heavens and Baator. In this tome is described the correlation between the Lord of the Tenth Gate, Gargauth, and Hu Sen, often referred to as the Mad Monkey.

I. DOMINUS DECIMUS

The Lost Lord comes to mortal knowledge through story, rumor, and general lore. Formally, he was the High Treasurer of Hell and a Lord in all rights. However, due to mostly unknown causes, he was cast out. It is rumored that he attempted to overthrow The Raging Fiend, its failure causing said banishment. Another such rumor involves the Lord of the Nine slaying a close associate of The Hidden Lord, forcing his departure from the Hells. Regardless of the truth, it is known that this Lord no longer walks the hells.

It is said that on the Prime he does walk. On Toril, or thereabouts, does the exiled Lord see to his notion of what may be. He interacts directly with the mortals through various guises to lead them into the methodologies which are experienced or expected within the Hells. He operates directly with those who may happen upon his travels, rather than those of deities or various Lords who only gently influence the lives of mortals.

What was the most curious detail was how, even in banishment, it is thought that the Tenth Lord maintained anywhere from loose relations to strong ties to various beings in the Hells, up to and including the various Archdevils. With his banishment, he was not beholden to the structures placed on those of the Nine, so could be an agent outside and do what they could not.

II. AD INSANIAM SIMIA

Hu Sen, often referred to as Monkey or the Mad Monkey, is known through teachings of the Path of Enlightenment, and often a favored figure for children and mischievous figures on Red Earth, or Kara-Tur. Monkey existed as one of the Immortals of the Celestial Empire, until cast out from Heaven due to unknown causes. It is said the Celestial Emperor removed him from his Empire due to his fondness for mischief. A rumored story is how the Mad Monkey sought to play a "prank" on the Emperor in the style of sitting on the Jade Throne and becoming Emperor himself, if only for the humor of it. Such a disgrace of the position of Emperor was found abhorrent and of grave offense that the Emperor personally saw to his banishment. It is also rumored that this prank was only a cover story as a vie for power. The exact reason for his banishment remains unknown, however.

His banishment placed him towards the fringes of Red Earth, on Toril. It is here that he sees to mortals, mainly travelers he crosses on his path. Monkey then offers knowledge and leads them towards the teachings and virtues of the Celestial Empire. It is here that Hu Sen is able to act and interact directly with mortals who may need to be urged closer to the Path, or other guidance.

Despite his banishment from Heaven, the Mad Monkey maintained his position as an Immortal of the Empire. He maintained relations with the Nine Immortals and the Emperor himself, who has given Monkey various tasks through the years. One such event came forth during conflict with a being known as Dragon Claw, who the Mad Monkey assisted with by directing mortals to combat with the backing of himself and the Celestial Empire. With his near detachment of the Empire, he could act freely without the binding of bureaucracy that comes with those in Heaven.

III. IUNCTIO

As showcased, the two beings have much in common. Flavored storytelling and the culture of the regional origins aside, the two are eerily similar. Both have been cast out of their respected greater organizations, yet remain tied to them through relation and ability. Both reside on Toril and interact directly with mortals. Both lead or nudge mortals toward the virtues of their teachings. Both continue to assist their respected organizations through their means as an exterior agent, filling the needs that those of the organizations could not.

The two are said to both find humor in trickery, be it casting snakes at sleeping mortals, or speaking in riddles that briefly confuse mortals. Both are charismatic, having no issue easing the company of those they travel with and finding something to speak on with any they are around. They also hold vast amounts of knowledge, something they bestow upon mortals or other beings for various reasons.

CONCLUSIO

These similarities are beyond the point where one can wave off the details as mere chance. Gargauth and Hu Sen share such close origins and stories that should one peel back the cultural coating, they can see that their chronicles are basically the same. With this, many conclusions can be made. While the writer has already made their own, the reader is left to explore these subjects so they may find their own truths. If wanting more on the subject, it is suggested one seeks out tomes on the Celestial Heaven, or the Celestial Hell series.
